Venturing into Textile Art

A couple of weeks ago, I got a request for a new type of project: purely fabric mixed media art. This commission was for a larger, textile wall art version of this checkered rainbow mixed media collage I’d done. Interested in trying something new, I decided to give it a go.

The work in progress – love the bright colors!

It took me awhile to decide how I would tackle this project, but I’d done a number of crewel embroidery projects over the years, so I am familiar with basic crewel stitching techniques. I decided to incorporate a combination of both crewel embroidery and acrylic painting into the rough burlap fabric.

It was a crazy amount of work to do the embroidery, and admittedly took much, much longer than I anticipated, but I think the end result is really fun and energetic, which is just how the client wanted it. Even the scrap paper (on the left) I was working on had a fun pattern left on it (I may have to include this in a future collage.)

Check out the end result here at my Etsy shop!

And if you’re interested in some custom art, let me know! I’d be happy to discuss options with you. And as with any purchase, 25% of proceeds are donated toward clean water well drilling in developing countries.

  1. Exploring in the art world is so much fun! It is like going on a hike and continually finding treasures that you didn’t expect to find. mom
