A couple of weeks ago, I got a request for a new type of project: purely fabric mixed media art. This commission was for a larger, textile wall art version of this checkered rainbow mixed media collage I’d done. Interested in trying something new, I decided to give it a go.
It took me awhile to decide how I would tackle this project, but I’d done a number of crewel embroidery projects over the years, so I am familiar with basic crewel stitching techniques. I decided to incorporate a combination of both crewel embroidery and acrylic painting into the rough burlap fabric.
I really enjoy painting on the burlap texture (I see more of this in my future!) and am so happy with how the final project turned out. It was a crazy amount of work to do the embroidery, and admittedly took much, much longer than I anticipated, but I think the end result is really fun and energetic, which is just how the client wanted it. Even the scrap paper (on the left) I was working on had a fun pattern left on it (I may have to include this in a future collage.)
And if you’re interested in some custom art, let me know! I’d be happy to discuss options with you. And as with any purchase, 25% of proceeds are donated toward clean water well drilling in developing countries.
